Medical Sonographers are key members of a health care team. They provide care to different people with varying health care needs, from those who enjoy relative health to those who are critically ill. They use medical ultrasound machines which produce high-frequency sound waves to create images of an individual’s internal organs, blood flow or tissues that physicians use to make their medical diagnosis. This procedure is called a an ultrasound scan or sonogram, and doctors are using it to examine many internal parts of the body such as the heart, prostate, breast, blood vessels, and other vital organs. It can be used to detect and treat heart problems. Medical sonographers explain the procedure to the patient who is about to undergo sonography. They are responsible for recording the patient’s medical history that may affect the results. They make the necessary setting adjustments to the equipment and give instructions to patients so they can move into appropriate positions that offer the best view. Sonographers use an instrument called a transducer, a device that transmits sound waves that are converted to images. To help sound waves to be transmitted efficiently, sonographers usually apply a special gel to the skin. On the monitor, they look of visual signs that identify unhealthy parts. Based on their experience and studies, they decide which images are good for diagnostic purposes and show them to the doctors. They prepare the reports, taking measurements, calculating values and analyzing the results before submitting it to the physicians for their interpretation.
Medical sonographers may also be involved in preparing work schedules, managing a medical facility’s diagnostic imaging or sonography department. They may specialize in different disciplines such as obstetric and gynecological sonography, abdominal sonography, neurosonography, breast sonography, vascular sonography or cardiac sonography.…
